What's Happening Here? Attempt to Understand Rappahannock County's "Recent Unpleasantness"
with Walter Nicklin
“There’s something happening here. What it is ain’t exactly clear…. There’s battle lines being drawn. Nobody’s right if everybody’s wrong.”
The popular song lyrics from the 1960s seem to have renewed urgency today, not just nationally but locally right here in Rappahannock County.
The class will be conducted as a seminar, with participants expected to voice diverse points of view in a friendly manner -- with the ultimate goal of trying to make sense of the currently contentious divisions in the County. These divisions, in both their openness and antagonism, seem a relatively recent occurrence here in formerly “gentlemanly” and tranquil Rappahannock. Are they simply a natural reflection of a polarized nation or something peculiar to Rappahannock?
Ron Maxwell and Walter Nicklin will be leading the seminar. That they frequently disagree on many serious issues has not prevented them from remaining friends. Ron is a film director, who moved to the County shortly after his well-known “Gettysburg” was released. Walter, publisher emeritus of the “Rappahannock News,” started building a cabin here in 1972 but feels like a native, having grown up just across the Rappahannock River in Fauquier County.
